Stony Brook University has marvelous opportunities for you to sink your teeth into. Yes, the phrase “sink your teeth into,” applies very well to the opportunity that I want to share with you. For all of you pre-dental students, listen up!

Although the fall 2013 semester festivities have already commenced and classes have begun, I want to share with you an experience that has changed my career path and outlook in the healthcare field. The Discover Dental School Summer Program opened my eyes to dentistry, and more specific, gave me the opportunity to get hands on experience and look into various paths in the profession. Two passions of mine have merged together from this program: animal dentistry and pediatrics- a slightly unusual combination for a focus or specialization, I know, but that is what makes a Seawolf standout! This program began its preliminary year this summer and lasted for a week. Fifty-two students from different universities across the United States attended this program. During this time, the participants, our mentors, and the faculty/staff at SB Dental School, became one big unit working together to explore and question the science in the field- we also became a close knit family too.  I remember working on my typodont, drilling and filling class I cavities, reading radiographs, as well as learning how to properly insert an IV that would be required for anesthesia. However, there was so much more that this program offered in addition to some of the examples I have listed. I reminisce since the program has ended, and I can only find myself putting a smile on, thinking about how much I learned from the program, including techniques and skills that are common in dental school and the career.

Overall, this program was an experience of a lifetime that I encourage any pre-dental student to apply this upcoming May! You surely do not want to miss out on this opportunity!
